Termites
Q. Is it necessary to install chemical or physical termite barriers if a steel frame is used? A. No. The Building Code of Australia permits two alternative approaches for termite management: use of termite resistant materials for the primary structural elements, or installation of a chemical or physical barrier system to the relevant Australian Standard. In Queensland, some components in addition to the primary structure are required to be termite resistant. In NSW, some regulatory publications incorrectly imply that termite barriers are compulsory - you should check with your Council, and contact NASH if local termite regulations appear to differ from the BCA. Available research suggests that the risk of termite damage to homes is greater if you choose a termite barrier system rather than a termite resistant frame. Also remember that barrier systems do not protect against borers or fungal decay.
